    Why is Luang Namtha Stupa So Special?

    Also known as Samakkhixay Stupa or the Golden Stupa, it is an iconic landmark in Luang Namtha. It is located on a hill and can be seen from many places around town. The Stupa is a stunning religious architectural masterpiece that holds both significant importance and beauty. You can enjoy the beautiful city view from the top of the tower. It contains a temple with Buddha statues and many murals.

    History of Luang Namtha Stupa

    Luang Namtha Stupa was built to represent the friendship between the kings of northern Thailand and Laos. Long ago, Sy Sod So Tammikarad King of Xieng Sean (now in northern Thailand) and Naleatafai King of Chantabouly (now Oudomxay) built two stupas to symbolize their friendship. One stupa is That Phoum Pouk, and the second stupa is now called Luang Namtha Stupa. It used to be located at the eastern headwaters of the Namtha River but was lost in the forest until it was rebuilt in December 2004. The temple was completed in 2008.

    How to Get There

    Luang Namtha Stupa is about 8 kilometers away from Luang Namtha Airport, and located in the city of Luang Namtha, Unfortunately, there is no information of public transportation to Luang Namtha Stupa. You can choose to rent a car or motorcycle to go there.
