Why is Phieng Ngam Handicraft Center So Special?
The Tai ethnic group in Luang Namtha is known for weaving cotton and silk clothing. You can learn how to weave with Tai Daeng and Tai Kao weavers in Phiengnam village in the Luang Namtha Valley. Don't hesitate to visit Luang Namtha and its handicraft center, which will reopen in 2022 after being closed for almost two years due to Covid-19 from late 2019 until 2021. We are now open regularly, so please come and visit the center.
It is also included in the Luang Namtha Valley Route, which is a self-guided route for cycling or motorcycling around Luang Namtha. This is an excellent way to witness and immerse oneself in Lao culture while meeting locals. Visit the Handicraft Center for shopping, refreshments, or a textile workshop.
What You Can Do in Phieng Ngam Handicraft Center
The handicraft center is full of sin (the traditional Lao skirts), table cloths, and scarves. The prices here are better than the local market, ranging from 50k to 180k kip as they are all weave and sold in one place. Not only are there products on sale, the skilled weavers also do demonstration and are happy to let tourists to try.
Learning to Weave
Following the map of cycling route in Luang Namtha to discover this Handicraft Center, located at Phieng Ngam Village. At the Handicrafts Center, you will see the Tai Deng women are weaving their products in the weaving room even when walking around the village you will see the Tai Deng women also produce their handicrafts at their home in their weaving loom. Visitors can learn the basic of weaving from local people who is the professional on their duty as cotton & silk weaving, also to see cotton color dyeing from natural material. If need the full course for weaving, cotton color dyeing, cooking local food, this program can book from travel agencies and tour companies in Luang Namtha town.
Overnight with Nice Ecolodge
At Phieng Ngam Handicrafts Center, there are two eco-lodge for visitors stay overnight, the price will include meal for your dinner and lunch. During your time staying at your accommodation, the guests can learn the Tai Deng Culture via the host family alike cooking Lao food, dressing traditional clothes, speak Lao language. In addition, if need to walk around the villagers in the village please inform your host family to let you go, you definitely will find out the local people have their own weaving loom for producing their own handicrafts for selling to the handicrafts center or to the market. The basket making by local old men, and producing the knives is also available to see.
How To Get There
Phieng Ngam Handicraft Center is located 6 kilometers away from the city center. It only takes 20 minutes to ride a bicycle to Phieng Ngam village.
