    There currently exists one train pair, D887/888, that runs daily between Vientiane, the capital of Laos, and Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province in southwest China. Including the time spent on border customs processes, the total duration is 10.5 hours. A first-class ticket costs approximately CNY864, while a second-class ticket costs roughly CNY542.  

    China - Laos Railway

    The China-Laos railway, also known as the Boten–Vientiane railway, is a 414-kilometer standard gauge electrified railway that is currently being built between Boten, a tiny town near the Chinese border, and Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The Yuxi-Mohan railway will link the railway line to the Chinese rail network in Mohan, which is located to the north. The China-Laos railway will link up with the current meter-gauge railway at Thanaleng to the south. It is an important development for the region, enhancing connectivity and facilitating trade between China and Laos. It also provides a convenient and efficient transportation option for passengers traveling between the two countries.

    • Buy online with official platforms

      Online ticket purchases are the most practical option. The best place to start is via China Railway Corporation's official website, 12306. cn, and their app, "Tielu 12306," which is also the Laos LCR Ticket App.
    • Buy Tickets at the Train Station

      From the designated ticket windows at the railway stations including Kunming South, Puer,  Xishuangbanna, and Mohanin China, and Boten, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, and Vientiane in Laos.
     

    Other Ways to Travel between the Two Countries

    In addition to the train, there are three other ways to travel between China and Laos: by air, by boat, or by coach.
    • Air Travel

    The fastest way to travel between the two countries is by air. Direct flights operate between Vientiane and Kunming. The flight duration is typically around 1.5 to 2 hours for direct flights. Ticket prices can range from approximately USD 150 to USD 300 or more for a one-way economy class ticket.
    • Riverboat

    The Mekong River, which flows through both China and Laos, offers an alternative transportation option. Riverboat services are available on certain sections of the Mekong River, providing travelers with a leisurely cruise experience while traveling between the two countries. This option is more commonly used for shorter trips within the border regions.
    • Coach (International Bus)

    Taking international coaches is a popular choice among budget travelers. You can board a coach at Kunming South Bus Station to travel to Vientiane or Luang Prabang in Laos. The Kunming-Vientiane coach departs at 18:00 and takes approximately 22 hours to cover a distance of 883 miles (1,421 km). The ticket price is around CNY 600. The Kunming-Luang Prabang coach leaves at 18:30 and takes approximately 17 hours for a distance of 684 miles (1,100 km). The ticket fare is about CNY 400.
