Attapeu (Lao: ອັດຕະປື, French pronunciation: [atapø]), also written as Attopu or Attapu, is the capital of Attapeu province, Laos. Its official name is Muang Samakhi Xay. It is the southernmost of the provincial capitals in Laos. It was known as the "land of heroism". The capital town, Samakkhixay is built in a large picturesque valley surrounded by mountains and the loop upstream. The majority of the population is Lao Loum. Constructed in 1939, the town center's Wat Luang Muang Mai temple is renowned for its original naga barge boards. Beside the temple, a monument honoring Kaysone Phomvihane was built.
