Luang Namtha is situated in the northern part of Laos and is a province with an area spanning 9,325 square kilometers (equivalent to 3,600 square miles). The province shares boundaries with various other regions such as Yunnan in China to the north, Oudomxai Province to the southeast and east, Bokeo Province to the southwest, and Shan State in Burma to the northwest. The province is recognized as a significant area for the production of sugar cane and rubber in Laos, with many plantations located there. The Mekong river (Nam Khong) constitutes the northwest border of the province. Three large rivers drain westwards/southwards into the Mekong; Nam Tha, Nam Fa and Nam Long. The Phou mountain range runs along the China/Lao border, consisting of mainly dry evergreen forest.
