Moving southwards for about 100 meters (110 yards), you will see the Mingun Pagoda. It is an unfinished work and you can only see the brick-laid foundation of 50 meters (165 feet) high. The next attraction – the huge Mingun Bell with 90 tons weight, is the largest in-used and well-preserved bell in the world. You can ring the bell in person if you give some donations to the bell-keeper. Afterwards, we will visit the white Settawya Paya, which was built by King Bodawpaya in 1811. There is also a Buddha’s footprint enshrined in the center of the pagoda. Another splendid attraction of your one-day private Mandalay tour is Hsinbyume Pagoda. It is also called “cream cake pagoda” because of its unique appearance.
At 13:00, we will take a boat back to Mandalay and then visit Shwenandaw Monastery. Originally, this building was inside the royal palace and served as the bedchamber of King Mindon Min (1853 – 1878) and his queen. After Mindon Min passed away, his successor Thibaw moved out and changed it into a Buddhist temple.
After that, we will go to the Kuthodaw Pagoda built in 1857. It is renowned for housing the largest ‘book’ on the earth, which refers to the 729 stone tablets inscribed with Buddhist scriptures inside the temple.
This itinerary will end with Mandalay Hill. Here you can enjoy the panoramic view of Mandalay City and Irrawaddy River, as well as the beautiful sunset. You may take an elevator to the top if you are tired and it is on your own expense.
